Jim Emmons, friend of the school, wrote up this great analysis of an argument that’s been bubbling over on the Facebook group “Smallsworders”.

the TL;DR is that George Sinclair (not his real name but that is not my place to reveal) recently won gold at a Canadian Highland Games event for smallsword (I think broadsword and singlestick too). He posted videos to the Smallsworders group celebrating this. He proceeded to be criticized for several of his attacks looking “too modern” – the pass/flèche being a modern Olympic invention and not something in sources (heavy sarcasm there. It is in sources. Read Jim’s post). This led to a lot of member measuring on both sides but ultimately was just depressing as you can see that the community needs to fight instead of celebrating.
Perhaps my favorite comment to come from all this is someone (I honestly don’t remember their name) commenting that “such overcommitted actions have no place in smallsword”. Which just reminds me of Mother Superior from the movie Sister Act. Every smallsword text acknowledges that your lunge, by definition is an overcommitted action.
